This is a bowl made of white ash that has been spalted. The unique thing about this bowl is that it is turned on its growth axis (end grain). Most bowls are turned on their sides such that the top and bottom of the bowl are actually the sides (where the bark would be) of the log. This bowl was turned in the other orientation by cutting down into the log from the cut ends such that the top and bottom of the bowl are the top and bottom of the log. These means that the grain that you see in the wood form above is actually the same as that when you might count growth rings. This cut created the "zig-zag" pattern on the sides of the bowl that gets more narrow as you go down the bowl. The base on this bowl is a bit thicker to provide additional suport to the wood. The bowl is finished in mineral oil and beeswax.
